Hunter S. Thompson’s exuberant writing is sometimes regarded as a manic off-shoot of New Journalism, and this chapter discusses the importance of not viewing Thompson as merely someone who occasionally wrote on sport, but as someone who defined himself principally as a sportswriter. Through close analysis of his texts, particularly his final collection, Hey Rube, a new perspective on Thompson and his oeuvre is developed.
