The concept of writing around as well as about sport is introduced, as is the idea that the better the writing, the more irrelevant the specific sport that is being written about: good sports writing is sometimes just good writing that happens to be about sport. Relatedly, the best sports writing transcends the discipline or game that is ostensibly the article′s focus. The myriad intersections between sports writing and mainstream creative writing, including fiction, receive an initial discussion. The author′s background as a sportswriter as well as an academic is introduced, as are the interviews with writers that are woven into the project. Sports writing′s ancient roots are interrogated through a discussion of the victory odes of Ancient Greece.
