摘要

The introduction to this book highlights the theme of wellbeing (ʿāfiyah) within Islamic schooling, focusing on its role and place in the holistic development of learners. The book originated from the 6th Islamic Schooling Conference, hosted by the Centre for Islamic Thought and Education at the University of South Australia in 2023. Scholars, educators, and community members contributed original research and practice insights exploring the theme of wellbeing. The book builds on classical philosophical and Islamic thought, exploring how ancient scholars such as Plato, Ibn Sina, and Al-Kindi approached wellbeing as a balance between physical, psychological, and spiritual health. Wellbeing in the Islamic worldview is not limited to the absence of illness but extends to a life aligned with divine principles, encompassing body, mind, and soul. The concept of ʿāfiyah is explored in various contexts throughout the chapters, where wellbeing is considered from within the Islamic tradition in light of contemporary educational practices in Islamic schools to promote both academic excellence and spiritual fulfilment. The chapter lays a foundation for readers to understand the multi-dimensional nature of wellbeing in Islamic schools and its critical role in nurturing holistic growth.
