This chapter focuses on what pushed the rulers of the kingdom of Georgia to pursue continuous southward territorial expansion in the eleventh–thirteenth centuries. Despite a wealth of literature on the political history of the Georgian conquests, the issue has yet to be studied from different perspectives. In the existing historiography, Georgia’s southern expansion is primarily explained by military-strategic interests. So far, only a few researchers, and only briefly, have mentioned trade and trade routes as a motivating factor for Georgia’s territorial expansion.
