The nigrostriatal pathway (NSP) connects the substantia nigra in the anterior midbrain with the caudate nucleus and putamen. The NSP runs medially and superiorly from the substantia nigra, at the medial base of the cerebral peduncle, close to the mesolimbic tract. At the level of the IIIrd ventricle, NSP fans out into the anterior limb of the internal capsule, to connect with the caudate nucleus and putamen.
