The medial lemniscus (ML) connects the spinal dorsal columns to the ventral posterolateral thalamic nucleus conveying fine touch and proprioception. ML runs from the gracile and cuneate nuclei in the inferior posterior medulla, to the ventral posterolateral nucleus of the thalamus, and subsequently the primary sensory cortex. ML fibers decussate in the medulla and ascend close to the midline in the posterior medulla, moving laterally in the pons, to be anterior to the spinothalamic tract. In the midbrain, ML remains lateral, and posterior to the cerebral peduncles.
