In recent years, there has been growing interest in harnessing renewable energy sources to address both economic and environmental concerns in maritime transportation. Among these renewable sources, wind energy has emerged as a promising option for reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions in the shipping industry. This trend is driven by the need to mitigate the adverse effects of traditional fossil fuel-powered vessels on the environment and to comply with increasingly stringent emissions regulations. The utilization of wind energy on ships involves various technologies and strategies, ranging from traditional sails to modern wind-assist propulsion systems. These systems can supplement conventional engine power, leading to reduced fuel consumption and operating costs while also lowering greenhouse gas emissions. To assess the feasibility and effectiveness of wind-assist technologies, sophisticated calculations and analyses are often employed, considering factors such as vessel characteristics, wind conditions, and fuel efficiency. This paper aims to explore the application of wind energy in maritime transportation, focusing on the historical evolution, contemporary technologies, economic benefits, and environmental implications. Through a comprehensive review of literature and analysis of relevant formulas, we seek to provide insights into the potential of wind-assist propulsion systems to contribute to a more sustainable and efficient shipping industry.
