Drone Technology and 3D Reconstruction Approach for Efficient Management of Mine Dump Slope

The objective of mining operations is to recover the maximum amount of ore that can be utilized while keeping the working environment risk-free. Mine dump slope management is crucial for the surface mining industry from the safety aspect. Unplanned dumping of overburden material is one of the reasons for slope failure, and this dump slope failure can be dangerous and result in the loss of human life and property as well as hampering the mining activity. Drone technology is one of the emerging technologies in every field and especially in the surface mining industry, because of its low operating cost, highly mobile, efficient operation, and one-time procurement is sufficient for the management of large surface mines. This paper focuses on using drone technology for the acquisition of high-quality images of a mine dump area and a 3D reconstruction approach for the generation of point clouds. Before beginning to fly the drone in order to acquire high-quality images, the primary characteristics that were taken into consideration were the flying altitude, the flying path, and the overlapping of images. Pix4D mapper software has been used for image processing, and for point cloud generation, a total 415 number of high-quality images are used. To improve the accuracy of the 3D model 8 ground control points (GCPs) have been collected using a total station. Results show that the digital surface model (DSM) and digital terrain model (DTM) generated from dense point clouds will be helpful in dump slope change monitoring.
