Success Story of Continuous Miner Technology Below Easily Caveable Roof

Single Pass pillar extraction-based Fish and Tail (Christmas Tree) mechanised depillaring method is found to be efficient in addressing the strata control issues below easily cavable roof of Pinoura colliery in Johilla Area of South Easter Coalfields Limited. It has been proved to be fast and safe in extraction of relatively smaller size of coal pillar (25 m × 25 m) up to 150 m depth of cover. Continuous coal cutting machine (Continuous Miner) in combination with shuttle/ram car and quad/twin-bolter are utilised during mechanised extraction of coal using Christmas Tree method. Average coal production from a depillaring panel using mechanised Continuous Miner (CM) technology using Christmas Tree method is around 2000 t and a record production of 6000 t has been achieved in a day in Indian coalfields. An average coal pillar size (20 m x 20 m x 3 m) can provide almost 2000 t of coal considering 70% recovery; therefore, a pillar is almost extracted in a day by CM in Pinoura mine. Average rate of advance with this technology was found to be around 8 m/day. Eleven districts of Pinoura mine have been successfully extracted under easily cavable roof having rock mass rating of around 40 with couple of incidences of CM burial due to hidden slips. Frequent caving of weak-laminated strata does not cause any strata control problem of roof overhang and the workings were free of induced stresses towards the outby side. Field studies in 11 panels of Pinoura mine has observed a maximum induced stress development up to 2.83 MPa and active mining zone up to 15 m from the line of extraction. Frequent problems of premature roof falls were encountered due to weak nature of overlying strata. Hidden slips were proved to be a major problem in speculating the behavior of easily cavable roof. Few cases of premature falls over CM caused its burial and trapping under roof debris due to hidden slips below easily cavable roof. These issues of trapping of CM under debris of premature roof falls were dealt successfully by developing a limiting value of roof deformation for safe working with the mechanised technology. Trapping of CM under debris of easily cavable roof slowed down the rate of extraction. This paper discussees the field studies related to behaviour of easily cavable roof in eleven panels of Pinoura mine using single pass pillar extraction method.
