Design of Cable Truss Support for Stability of Roadways Under Weak/Laminated Roof at Adriyala Longwall Project

Roadways (main/tail gates) of the Adriyala longwall project of M/s Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) are developed along the floor horizon under the weak/laminated roof strata. The life of these roadways at this project is around 6–7 years as per geo-mining parameters. During the extraction of the third panel of the project at around 600 m depth of cover, instability at a few locations in the roadways is observed due to considerable roof sagging and reduction in bonding at the grout-rock interface near the ceiling of the roof. Under the circumstances, a standing type of support system is required for the stabilization of the roadway. Application of standing support like steel arch is difficult to install due to the presence of equipment in the main serviceable roadway and unavailability in India. A cable truss support system is found to be an alternative to standing support under weak formation from a global literature survey. The impact of cable truss support systems in weak immediate roof strata is also examined through a three-dimensional numerical simulation study and found to be effective under the existing condition of the project. A simulation study by varying the diameter of the cable truss from 18 mm to 24 mm was carried out and a cable truss of 23.5 mm diameter was found to provide better confinement in immediate roof strata. It has been observed that the cable truss system provided an average of 20–25 percent more horizontal compressive stress in immediate roof strata and minimized the roof sagging too, which will be helpful for the stabilization of existing geo-mining conditions of the roadway at this project. Based on the study, a cable truss support system has been introduced in a roadway of the longwall project and its performance evaluation is in progress.
