Investigation on Effects of Rainfall Infiltration and Groundwater Level on Stability of Coal Mine Waste Dump—A Case Study

Rapid rainwater infiltration, particularly after sudden rainstorm events, increases the danger of waste dump failure. Such inflows can rapidly saturate the dump material, lowering its shear strength and stability. Further, if the dump is below or near to a water source, the proximity can result in continuous moisture accumulation, leading to material saturation. This increased moisture content raises pore water pressures, increasing the risk of the waste dumps structural stability. Using the Srirampur opencast project waste dump as a case study, we investigate the effect of rainfall-induced groundwater rise on dump stability. The study found that rising groundwater levels caused by rainfall infiltration lowered the Factor of safety and dump material shear strength. The paper focuses on rainfall infiltration modeling and groundwater levels under steady state conditions to evaluate the factor of safety using numerical modeling for steady state boundary conditions.
