Best Practices for Use of Recycled Asphalt Pavement

The utilization of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) for road construction has been a widely adopted practice due to its economic, environmental, and resource conservation benefits, which are benefits to humanity. This paper provides a comprehensive review and guidelines on using RAP in road construction. It discusses performance evaluation, typical distresses, and best management techniques for RAP. Performance tests show that increasing RAP percentages can decrease the chance of rutting, but the possibility of low-temperature cracking may be heightened. This study describes typical distresses, frequently ascribed to aged asphalt binder and including cracking, rutting, and moisture damage. Essential best practices for RAP processing, storage, and quality control are outlined. Particular focus is placed on the effects of milling equipment, depth, and speed on RAP quality and the critical function of moisture content in RAP storage. The paper concludes by emphasizing the need for appropriate rejuvenating agents in high RAP content mixtures and the essential role of effective RAP management practices.
