Training Programs for Robotic Liver Surgery

This chapter draws attention to the importance of structured, proficiency-based progression training in the implementation of novel surgical approaches. The introduction of new surgical techniques should not come at the cost of patient safety. Training programs aid in the optimization of the surgeon’s learning curve helping to mitigate surgical errors. This chapter explores previously implemented robotic surgery training curricula in various surgical specialities and goes on to outline important considerations for a training program in robotic liver surgery. The LIVEROBOT training program is introduced as the first international, multicentre formal training program for robotic liver surgery. The goal of the program is the safe and effective implementation of robotic liver surgery across Europe. Its curriculum incorporates a variety of teaching methods such as simulation-based training, a procedure video library, video assessment, and proctoring. It can be expected that in the future the robotic approach to hepatectomy will continue to be disseminated further.
