Literature plays an important role in our lives. Thomas King in his book The Truth About Stories says, “the truth about stories, is that’s all we are” (King, 2003, p. 2). King states that literature and stories are the cornerstones of our cultures and communities. It is the way we learn about past, present, and future situations and make sense of our own experiences. Literature plays a significant role in the lives of children, especially primary school children. Children’s literature is often the ways in which children are socialized into their communities, cultures, traditions, and other identity groups (Reynolds, 2011). Through literature, children are taught values like kindness, empathy, respect, and courage. Literature helps children affirm and make sense of their own experiences as well as expand what they know. This chapter will explore how children’s literature can be used to teach children about activism and how they can strive to be change makers in their communities. There will be an exploration of how educators of young children can use specific key strategies to bring this learning to their students in practical ways. The term children’s literature and books will be used interchangeably. and primary-aged children will refer to children aged 4–10.
