This chapter discusses the architecture of radio access networks (RAN) in the context of 4G and 5G technologies, focusing on basestation components, protocol stacks, and interfaces like common purpose radio interface (CPRI) and enhanced CPRI (eCPRI). It explains the division of the basestation protocol stack into layers, including NAS, RRC, SDAP, PDCP, and RLC, highlighting their roles in supporting mobility, session management, and radio resource control. It also explains the division of the basesatation into the baseband and RF parts. The CPRI and eCPRI interfaces facilitate high-speed data transmission between baseband units and remote radio heads, enhancing network performance. Additionally, the chapter provides insights into RAN architecture splits into Central and Distributed Unites (CU and DU) and references technical specifications developed by 3GPP and O-RAN alliance.
