What can we glean about the fundamental fantasy in Seminar VI? Many things, of course, but first and foremost the idea that fantasy appears owing to the failure to desire, the non-assumption of one’s desire (S6, p. 414). The implicit claim here is that when we really and truly desire, we dissipate fantasy, we have no need for fantasy. This intersects with what we say in everyday discourse about fantasy when we say that so and so is stuck in a fantasy world, or is a dreamer or a daydreamer, and never gets around to actually doing anything to realize his or her dreams and fantasies.
