Theory Choice

This chapter considers how theory is, or should be, selected. Obscure forms of writing are challenged for their risk to reader autonomy and genuine critical engagement, and a tendency to cultism. Science is endorsed as a secure base, while stopping short of scientism. Other ways that theory may be judged reliable are explored. The critical realist alternative to positivism in understanding research is further discussed. This is illustrated with a critical realist take on Crittenden’s Dynamic Maturational Model of Attachment and Adaptation. The chapter concludes that all genuine science has always been critical realist. It is the positivist and strong constructionist understanding of science that has been in error.
