The Great Salt Lake is the largest natural lake west of the Mississippi River. It is an oasis for millions of migratory birds, is a driving force behind Utah’s mineral and mining industry, provides 20% of lake-effect precipitation, and is a staple tourist attraction. The Great Salt Lake is located in the lowest area of a 22,060-mile drainage basin and receives very little water from local sources.
