Black Patients and the Historical Context of Racism in Medical Care

This chapter provides a lens through which to understand the longstanding and ongoing impact of racism in medical care, emphasizing the urgent need for systemic changes in healthcare practices and policies. It explores the complex and troubling history of medical racism, particularly focusing on the experiences of Black patients in the United States. In this chapter, healthcare disparities experienced by Black patients, such as limited access to healthcare services, implicit biases among healthcare providers, and an increased prevalence of chronic health conditions, are reviewed. A historical perspective is provided, tracing back to the Transatlantic Slave Trade and slavery in the United States, highlighting how these historical injustices have contributed to current healthcare disparities. Additionally, the chapter discusses the impact of medical racism on Black patients’ mental health, emphasizing the need for culturally sensitive and equitable healthcare services. It concludes with a call for healthcare professionals to acknowledge this historical context and work towards dismantling biases to create an inclusive and respectful healthcare environment.
