Behavioral and Electrophysiological Tests in Audiology

Audiological evaluations play an important role in otology and neurotology. A correct hearing assessment ensures that the right steps are taken in the medical and rehabilitative management of the patient. The hearing performance of adults and children affects their quality of life, especially their speech, academic, social, and cognitive development, and occupational status. For this reason, it is important for otolaryngologists to be familiar with the tests that guide diagnosis and treatment in audiological evaluations. Both behavioral and objective measures are needed to evaluate hearing in audiology. In addition to the most commonly used pure-tone and speech audiometry, acoustic immittance, otoacoustic emissions (OAEs), and auditory brainstem responses (ABRs), there are other tests that enrich the diagnostic and follow-up processes. This chapter includes assessment and follow-up tests and materials for the evaluation of adult and pediatric hearing, especially those that have recently been developed with the aid of technology.
