摘要

Experimental research, the gold standard for generating empirical knowledge, is a thorough process. It involves simulating real-life situations, manipulating independent variables, and measuring outcomes. Experiments, the most powerful method of science, establish causal relationships. To provide valid answers, they must be carefully designed and executed, ensuring the validity and reliability of the results. Hypothesis formulation is the most crucial element of experimental design. In the medical sciences, experimental research aims to establish the relationship between cause and disease. This is achieved through a diverse range of methodologies, showcasing the adaptability and versatility of the field, including administering substances, surgical procedures, and pharmaceutical agents under various conditions. Experimental medical research in otology and audiology aims to identify the most efficacious therapeutic or monitoring strategies for treating or diagnosing human diseases such as age-related hearing loss, ototoxicity, Meniere’s disease, or middle ear inflammation (otitis media). This chapter explores why primary experimental research is crucial in otology and audiology. It also considers in vitro and in vivo experimental models, including the use of animal cells and tissues, animal models, the choice of experimental animals, the evaluation of animal auditory functions, and the ethical issues arising in this context.
