Presbycusis
摘要
Presbycusis is the loss of hearing that occurs with age. It typically occurs between the ages of 55 and 65 and causes a sensorineural type of hearing loss that begins gradually at high frequencies and affects both ears. The clinical criteria on which the diagnosis of presbycusis is based are the presence of progressive hearing loss, hearing loss in both ears, and onset at high frequencies. Presbycusis has a profound effect on the quality of life of the elderly. Because hearing loss impairs communication, it leads to psychosocial isolation and increases potential cognitive deficits. Recent evidence suggests that presbycusis may be an early sign or a major cause of dementia. Although rehabilitation using modern technology for presbycusis is effective, it is less widely used by patients than expected. Improvements in the overall health of individuals occur after hearing aid rehabilitation. Approaches such as gene therapy and improving cochlear function with new drug treatments are promising areas of research to restore hearing. Further research and development in these areas is needed for future treatments.
