Tympanosclerosis

Tympanosclerosis is a pathological condition that develops as a result of chronic inflammation of the middle ear. It is characterized by irreversible hyaline degeneration and calcification of the tympanic membrane, ossicles, middle ear cavity, and sometimes the mastoid cavity. Tympanosclerosis is not a disease itself but a consequence of the extraordinary healing of chronic inflammation. However, tympanosclerosis refers to a broader definition that may involve all elements of the tympanic cavity and may be associated with many clinical findings, especially hearing loss. Although its etiology is not well understood, it is thought to be an exaggerated healing response to trauma and chronic inflammation. Although there is no consensus on the treatment of tympanosclerosis, surgery is considered the mainstay of treatment.
