Applications of Biomass Materials in Agricultural Nitrogen and Phosphorus Non-point Source Pollution Control

Agricultural non-point source pollution, particularly from nitrogen and phosphorus, has emerged as a major contributor to the deterioration of water environments. Biomass, as a large reserve of renewable energy, has attracted a lot of attention due to its convenient sourcing and environmental friendliness. This paper provides an overview of the current applications of biomass materials in the management of agricultural nitrogen and phosphorus non-point source pollution, including straw returning to the field, the utilization of biochar, biodegradable mulches, biomass-based superabsorbent polymers, and the development of biomass-based substrates. This article summarizes the limitations present in current research, and proposes future directions and recommendations for the use of biomass materials in the control of agricultural nitrogen and phosphorus non-point source pollution.
