The Nash Equilibrium

  • Panayotis G. Michaelides

摘要

This chapter focuses on the notion of Nash Equilibrium, a pivotal pillar in Game Theory. Nash Equilibrium serves as a foundational framework that sheds light on the strategic conduct of rational actors within competitive contexts, where each player strives to optimize their outcomes, based on individual preferences while taking into account the potential actions of others. A centerpiece example of Nash’s theory is the Prisoner’s Dilemma, a model that encapsulates the tension between self-interest and collective well-being. However, the application of Nash Equilibrium encounters significant challenges that raise questions about the practical viability of the model’s assumptions, particularly in complex real-world situations where human behavior may deviate from strict rationality. While the model’s assumptions may seem idealized, its power lies in shedding light on the complexities of decision-making within economic and social contexts. By examining Nash Equilibrium, we gain a deeper understanding of how individual actions can shape collective outcomes, offering a perspective that bridges theoretical foundations with practical realities.
