In Pursuit of the Queen of Angels: Notes on Underwater Archaeology
摘要
Based on the knowledge of the discovery of the spoils of the Portuguese ship Nossa Senhora Rainha dos Anjos (1716–1722), diplomacy on underwater heritage, and the problem of the depredation of underwater archaeological sites, this paper seeks to demonstrate the importance of preserving and protecting this cultural material. Having as a historical setting the Portuguese embassy to China (1720–22), the heritage characteristics of the ship and its cargo are under analysis, along with the actions of private exploration companies and the consequences of the contextual alienation of archaeological artefacts. Lastly, the value of heritage is put into perspective, regarding the production of scientific knowledge as well as the historical memory and identity of international relations.
