Analysing the Urban Landscape of Ouro Preto: Reflections on the Historic Urban Landscape

Landscape as part of various fields of interpretation has accompanied changes in paradigms and contexts and, in its encounter with heritage, has inaugurated conceptual and reflective bases capable of representing a fundamental idea and re-establishing the connection between human beings and their environment. This paper proposes an analysis of the urban landscape of the Brazilian city of Ouro Preto from the perspective of the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) with the aim of reflecting on the extent to which the effects of tourism and migration have impacted the urban identity of Ouro Preto and what the main challenges are in preserving its historic urban landscape. This analysis is anchored in a bibliographical review, cartographic research and image analyses that have allowed us to illustrate the difficulties in managing memory using two examples of Ouro Preto’s urban landscape.
