Plankton Size Classification

Plankton vary greatly in size, from microscopic to very large organisms, and scientists use a size classification system to understand their ecological roles. This system, originating from Victor Hensen’s 1880s research, and evolved since then, categorizes plankton into groups, such as megaplankton, macroplankton, mesoplankton, microplankton, nanoplankton, picoplankton, and femtoplankton. Each category has unique ecological implications, influencing interactions within the marine environment, biogeochemical cycles, and the broader aquatic ecosystem’s health and function.
