As climate change intensifies solutions such as leveraging oceanic and coastal ecosystems to capture and store atmospheric CO₂ are gaining attention for their potential to mitigate global warming. Key strategies involve enhancing the natural carbon sequestration capabilities of marine ecosystems through methods such as iron fertilization, direct cultivation of phytoplankton, and artificial upwelling. While these approaches show promise, they also pose significant ecological risks, such as harmful algal blooms, potential disruption of marine ecosystems, and logistical challenges. The socio-economic aspects include high costs, the need for subsidies, and ethical considerations regarding the manipulation of natural systems for commercial gain. Therefore, adopting a precautionary approach, conducting thorough research, and establishing robust regulatory frameworks are crucial to ensure that these strategies contribute effectively to climate mitigation without compromising marine ecosystems health.
