This process, which includes both passive sinking of organic matter and active transport via zooplankton migration, helps mitigate global warming by reducing atmospheric CO2 levels. The passive pump alone sequesters 5–10 gigatons of carbon annually, while the active pump adds an additional 1–2 gigatons. Climate change impacts, such as ocean warming and acidification, threaten the efficiency of these pumps, potentially leading to increased atmospheric CO2 and disrupted marine ecosystems. Understanding and protecting these processes is vital for maintaining climate stability and marine health.
