Adrift but not Lost: Dispersal and Colonization Strategies of Plankton
摘要
Plankton use diverse dispersal and colonization strategies to exploit resources and sustain aquatic ecosystems. They mainly rely on ocean currents, wind patterns, and turbulent mixing for passive transport. Some, like copepods, enhance this with diel vertical migration, moving vertically to access food and avoid predators. Microplankters use flagella and flotation mechanisms for positioning. Plankton also hitch rides attached to larger organisms or survive through fish digestive systems to reach new habitats. Human activities, such as ballast water discharge and plastic pollution, have facilitated plankton spread, sometimes introducing invasive species. Once in suitable habitats, plankton rapidly colonize through high reproductive rates. Understanding their dispersal is crucial as climate change alters ocean conditions, impacting marine ecosystems.
