This study aims to explore acpect of local people’s place attacment that contribute to understanding the meaning and shaping of the character of identity-giving urban spaces. The Pempatan Agung area of Gianyar, Bali was chosen as a case study to represent other areas in Bali with similar characteristics. This area is a remnant of a traditional city centre that has the potential to fulfil sustainable urban revitalization. The results show that the activities of local residents in the area as well as their demographic background influence their response to the place. Through a phenomenological and functional approach, this study shows that people’s ability to identity and percieve the material elements of the city tends to use them according to their socio religious functions. This suggests that users attachment to a place is oriented towards social and ideological aspects as well as the characteristics of that place.
