Neurofeedback Basics and Applications
摘要
This chapter explores the innovative realm of neurofeedback, a sophisticated branch of biofeedback that empowers individuals to modulate their own brain activity using operant conditioning principles and advanced brain imaging technologies. Neurofeedback utilizes real-time feedback from EEG and fMRI to enable conscious adjustment of brain functions, tapping into the brain’s neuroplastic capabilities to enhance cognitive and emotional processing. The technique is presented as a potent tool for clinical applications, effectively addressing a range of neurological and psychiatric disorders such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), epilepsy, anxiety, and depression, and offering a viable alternative or complement to traditional drug therapies. Additionally, neurofeedback is explored for its potential in cognitive enhancement and mental wellness among healthy individuals, highlighting its benefits in improving cognitive abilities, promoting relaxation, and enhancing overall well-being. This chapter sets the stage for a deeper exploration of neurofeedback’s foundational concepts, neurophysiological mechanisms, and broader implications for mental health and cognitive enhancement in Volume 2.
