The Impact of COSO System Implementation of Internal Control on Improving the Quality of Financial Statements in Jordanian Commercial Banks Listed in Amman Stock Exchange

The study seeks to assess how the application of the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO) framework for internal control, which encompasses risk assessment, control environment, control activities, monitoring, and communication and information, contributes to enhancing the quality of financial statements in commercial banks in Jordan. The study employed a descriptive analytical approach and targeted employees of Jordanian commercial banks. To gather data, a questionnaire consisting of 54 items was utilized to measure the variables’ dimensions. A total of 450 questionnaires were distributed, and 399 were deemed suitable for analysis, resulting in an 88% response rate. The data were then examined using SPSS software. The study revealed a significant and positive impact of the COSO framework for internal control, including all its dimensions, on the improvement of financial statement quality in Jordanian commercial banks. Moreover, the study reported a high level of implementation of the COSO framework for internal control and an improvement in the banks’ financial statements quality. The study found that the monitoring aspect had the most substantial influence on improving service levels. As a result, the recommendation was made to strengthen the understanding of the COSO framework for internal control among bank management and to implement its various dimensions, as they have proven to significantly enhance the quality of financial statements.
