Moonlighting Proteins: Importance and Current Scenarios

This chapter investigates the current scenario of moonlighting proteins, elucidating some molecular mechanisms and structural adaptations, besides highlighting their profound impact on pathogenesis for different organisms and situations. The related databases and main forms of prediction are explored, using some characteristics observed in described moonlighting proteins and applying them to bioinformatics tools. Lastly, the potential applications of moonlighting proteins for therapeutic purposes are discussed. In conclusion, moonlighting proteins prediction, as well as their validation as targeting molecules and practice application remain as great challenges for future research and therapeutic innovation.
