This chapter provides the fundamentals of anomaly detection. Anomalies are described in Sect. 3.1 with basic definitions and characterization of their types, circumstances in which they occur, dimensions, interpretations, and how they can be learned. The main anomaly detection methods are grouped into six categories: regression, classification, clustering, statistical, spectral, and information theory. They are detailed in Sect. 3.2. Finally, Sect. 3.3 covers the advanced topics in this research area.
