Propagation, Conservation and Improvement of Industrial Crops Through Tissue Culture

Plant tissue culture has emerged as a highly effective technology for enriching crop yield and quality. Advancements in tissue culture techniques have promoted the regeneration of different horticultural species. For an extensive variety of crops, micropropagation and in vitro techniques of tissue culture are used for commercial-scale multiplication. A substantial degree of genetic homogeneity among the regenerated plants is essential for the clonal propagation and preservation of superior genetic variants. These genetic variants are selected based on their exceptional qualities. Crops with varying genetic makeup can be created using methods like embryo transfer, anther culture, and protoplast fusion. Clonal propagation and mass proliferation are the major tissue culture techniques that are responsible for various factors like the maintenance of germplasm, the crop enhancement potential, and the profitability of industrial crops. In this chapter, we highlight the techniques utilized in plant tissue culture and emphasize their significance for industrial crop production.
