First recognized and named by van Bemmelen, the ‘Batak Tumor’ is a broad elliptical uplift (220 × 100 km) of basement rocks (older sedimentary and metamorphic rocks) on which Toba sits at its crest (Fig. 4.1). It is hard to know whether this striking topographic feature developed as a result of the accumulation of vast volumes of magma beneath Toba in the past few million years or whether this part of the Barisan Mountains had been in existence many millions of years prior to Toba.
