Damage to DNA leads to cancer. Such damage can be provoked by genetic and not genetic factors. The basic mechanisms of cancer development are common across different cancer types. Hereditary and/or somatic mutations that affect pathways important for cell proliferation, telomere machinery, and signaling pathways are some of the causes that trigger cancer. Environmental factors and alterations of inflammatory signaling pathways contribute to tumor progression. The advent of new technologies has helped create a map of cancer by combining several unique features of cancer cells that can be studied altogether. Here, we highlight pivotal pathways and new ways to integrate different data.
