Diagnostic Techniques: Autofluorescence

Fundus autofluorescence (FAF) is an in vivo imaging method that allows for noninvasive metabolic topographic mapping of naturally or pathologically occurring intrinsic bis-retinoid fluorophores of the ocular fundus. Most bis-retinoid fluorophores accumulate within lysosomal storage bodies in post-mitotic retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells known as lipofuscin. Other bis-retinoid fluorophores can occur in the outer retina and subretinal space in various disease states. Consequently, most FAF signals originate at the level of the RPE/photoreceptor complex. Since choroidal tumors can cause metabolic dysfunction of RPE cells, the accumulation of bis-retinoid fluorophores can result in orange appearing deposits overlying a choroidal tumor.
