Introduction: What Is Legal and Forensic Psychology?

The purpose of this chapter is to introduce our readers to the field of legal and forensic psychology and to facilitate the contextual comprehension of the following chapters. First, we present some key historical developments that cemented the beginnings of legal and forensic psychology as we know it today. Then, we elaborate on the main topics of interest of researchers and practitioners in both domains included in this book. Further, to demonstrate the practical utility of legal and forensic psychology, we will present the main tasks behind the expert witness role legal and forensic psychologists regularly take on. Finally, we hope this chapter will aid recognition of the importance of legal and forensic psychology and ignite deeper interest in this psychology domain beyond just the topics discussed in this book.
