The initial focus of this paper is to conduct an extensive analysis of blockchain technology, with particular emphasis on its evolution, Zero-Knowledge Proofs, intricacies of cryptography encompassing public key cryptography, hash functions utilized in blockchain, quantitative comparisons of consensus algorithms, and an inclusive inventory of blockchain applications. This paper also concentrates on the security of blockchain technology. This paper presents the challenges and current research trends that need to be addressed to increase the scalability and attain secure blockchain systems that can support vast deployments. This paper explores various intriguing use cases of blockchain technology that are unrelated to cryptocurrencies. In fact, beyond its initial application in the financial sector and cryptocurrencies, blockchain technology is increasingly being utilized in numerous diverse applications where its distinct characteristics have enabled the development of innovative and occasionally groundbreaking solutions. This paper specifically considers the following application scenarios: supply chain management, management of healthcare records, access control systems, systems for identity management, and end-to-end verifiable electronic voting. In each of these situations, we begin by analyzing the issue, the related needs, and the possible advantages that adopting blockchain technology could provide. Subsequently, we discuss various related solutions that have been proposed in the academic and corporate spheres.
