“Portovenere, Cinque Terre, and the Islands (Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto)” is a UNESCO World Heritage site nominated in 1997. Located in the North of Italy in the Liguria Region, it is a coastal cultural landscape which includes several villages built on cliffs and shores, as well as steep terraced and cultivated areas. It is historically subject to several hazards (floods, landslides, droughts, etc.), and climate change risks are expected to exacerbate in the coming years. This paper wants to unfold the governance framework and the strategies and actions the UNESCO site is putting in place to tackle climate change risks and consequences. In fact, a set of diversified actions is needed to ensure the protection of the universal values, which led to the inscription of the site in the WHL (World Heritage List). The paper highlights context, approaches, and solutions so that they can be useful for other cultural heritage sites (both inscribed in the UNESCO WHL or not) that are facing similar challenges.
