Consultation for Thrombocytopenia

Successful management of acute thrombocytopenia developing during acute illness is complex. A detailed history to investigate infectious, autoimmune, and exposure to immunogenic and myelotoxic medications is necessary to identify potential etiology. Diagnostic approximation can be achieved by algorithms and score systems to allow rapid therapeutic intervention. In this chapter, we describe the most common clinical scenarios found during consultation for acute thrombocytopenia and provide detailed reference for adequate management.
