Measuring a distance consists of performing operations to determine the linear dimension of an object or the length of a line between two points on the ground surface. For this purpose, engineers have several measuring instruments at their disposal, the choice of which depends on several factors, such as the desired accuracy, the roughness of the terrain, the type of object to be measured, the distance length, and the operator’s skill. In this context, distance measurement methods available for Geomatics applied to Civil Engineering can be divided into two classes, according to the surveying instruments used for the measurement.
