Malay Muslim Women as Digital Being: Embracing Changes or Defying Forces?

When looking at digital society in a sociological practice, it is done to understand a result but not concerning the Internet or the digital aspect. Instead, it is to understand how the conditions and the context of Internet technologies are affecting people and their culture. The focus of the discussion in this chapter is to offer insight into how Malay Muslim women in Malaysia are dealing with these circumstances while upholding their cultural demands in the digital age. It presents a narrative view of how women strive to reconcile cultural demands while trying hard to adapt to the digital realm. These insights are gained from how Malay Muslims interact with their environment. Some interactions can be seen in an informal context, and also at the simplest, for women, their interaction with people and things can be established in their routines, customs, or norms. This chapter hopes to explore the relationship between women’s digital being and culture and how social and technological factors shape them. The discussion will employ a sociological imagination framework to elucidate how Malay Muslim women remain culturally human in a digital society and to understand how challenges faced by Muslim women could lead to broader societal issues.
