An Introduction to Marine Ecosystem: Environmental and Economic Impacts
摘要
Marine life accounts for two-thirds of the Earth’s surface, boasting a diverse range of species, and provides enormous services, such as food, shelter, employment, security, transportation, and scientific research. Marine ecosystems encompass various zones defined by water depth, sunlight, and shoreline features. These include the oceanic zone (vast open ocean), benthic/midnight aphotic zone (deep below the surface), intertidal/twilight dysphotic zone (between low and high tides), and nearshore zone (sunlit coastal area). However, environmental factors, including pollution, overfishing, and increased human activities, profoundly affect marine ecosystems, posing significant health risks to marine species. Moreover, marine ecosystems are vital for supporting diverse industries and making substantial contributions to the global economy. Thus, protecting the health and biodiversity of our oceans is essential for the future of our planet.
