Lipid Metabolism Dysregulation: Impact on Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is referred to a cluster of dysregulated physiological and biochemical parameters such as dyslipidemiaDyslipidemia, hypertriglyceridemia, hyperglycemiaHyperglycemia, hypertension and obesity. Such abnormalities increase the predisposition to cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes. In fact, the etiology of MetS could be determined by the interaction between genetic and environmental factors. While considered a disease in adults, risk factors for MetS have also been seen in children and adolescents. In addition, sex and ethnicity may also have an important role in the incidence of MetS that could not only influence the risk of CVD and diabetes, but may also impact the approaches undertaken for prevention and/or treatment of MetS. Accordingly, in this article we have described the impact of lipid metabolismLipid metabolism dysregulation on MetS as well as some important considerations that could assist in the understanding of the risk and incidence/prevalence of MetS and their adverse outcomes.
