Pharmacological Interventions of Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome poses a significant health burden globally, characterized by a cluster of interconnected risk factorsMetabolic syndromerisk factors, including obesity, hyperlipidaemia, hypertension, and insulin resistance. The management of the metabolic syndrome is aiming to mitigate its associated complications and make better patients’ quality of life. The alteration of lifestyle and pharmacological interventions are used in the management of the metabolic syndrome. Various risk factorsMetabolic syndromerisk factors such as obesity, dyslipidaemiaDyslipidaemia, insulin resistance and hypertension are targeted first with lifestyle modification. However, the pharmacological interventions become necessary when lifestyle modification is failed to achieve desirable results. Key pharmacological interventions include statins and fibrates for hyperlipidaemia management, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) for hypertension control, and insulin sensitizers like metformin and/or thiazolidinedione or sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors for addressing insulin resistance. Novel agents such as glucagon-like peptide-1Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists are emerged as effective choices for managing both glycaemic control and weight in metabolic syndrome. In conclusion, the individual drug or combination therapyCombination therapy can be used to target multiple components of the metabolic syndrome. There is still requirement of further research and clinical trials to optimize treatment strategies, enhance efficacy, minimize adverse effects, advancing the management of metabolic syndrome and reducing its associated morbidity and mortality.
