Role of Mycorrhizal Association in Leguminous Plant Growth

Mycorrhiza is the specific symbiotic relationship that fungi have with higher plants, particularly those that are leguminous. According to fossil records, arbuscular mycorrhizal connections began to emerge about 400 and 450 million years ago. In order to produce plant growth hormones, boost food availability, and suppress root infections, Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) create root colonisation and build a connection between the plant and the substrate. Arbuscular Mycorrhizal The diversity of fungal species is important for bioremediation, nutrient and water uptake, improving the mineralization process, and improving soil characteristics. Roughly 80% of all terrestrial plant species that are known to science develop mycorrhizal relationships with common soil fungus. AMF is used to reduce environmental stress and improve agricultural productivity and ecological stability. By increasing the amount of AMF in the soil through the rotation of mycorrhizal crops, harmful elements are treated, improving agricultural productivity and stabilising ecological services. Crop productivity and ecosystem sustainability can be significantly enhanced by AMF, a crucial functional group of soil biota. Plants maintain an equilibrium free-market symbiosis using a variety of methods, including the autoregulation of mycorrhizae and the local and systemic regulation of mycorrhizal symbiosis by plant nutritional status. Prior to being used as biofertilizers and bio-protectors for sustainable agriculture, a deeper comprehension of the synergistic effects between mycorrhizal fungi and mycorrhizosphere microorganisms is needed. This chapter primarily focuses on beneficial arbuscular mycorrhizal interactions due to their high ecological and economic significance and possible applications. In environmentally sustainable agriculture, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi have the potential to act as “biofertilizers and bio-protectors” by colonising the roots of numerous agriculturally significant food and bioenergy crops.
